Summary: Lauren H. Schwartz expresses support for the petition by highlighting the importance of safe and private access to gender-affirming hormone therapy. She argues against creating barriers to medical care and opposes the idea of placing trans individuals on a registry for prescribed medications.
Access to hormone therapy is literally a connection to life for loved ones and other trans people in my community. I fear a future where we cannot safely access medical care or where we must sacrifice our privacy and safety in order to get life-saving medications. Our systems already make receiving any sort of basic medical care dependent on wealth and access to the other resources required to navigate incredibly complicated systems. When I am struggling enormously and need medical care related to my gender, why should I have barrier after barrier put between me and the medication that my legally liscened doctor has asked me to take? And why should a trans woman on estrogen be put on a registry when menopausal women, or recipients of any other legal, safe and medically prescribed medication are not?
