Summary: David A. Kessler argues that the current food system contributes significantly to chronic diseases and declining life expectancy in the United States. He advocates for treating refined foods as drugs and re-imagining the food-pharmaceutical complex to promote public health and reduce healthcare costs.
Processed foods drive illness and decrease longevity when eaten in excess as many Americans do. They drive weight gain, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer's and other brain disorders, etc. Plainly America is sick! Our life expectancies, for the first time, are less than in previous generations. These foods are engineered to be addicting and act on the brain as a drug. It's time to wake up and help Americans get well again, decrease disease and disability and lose weight. Stop this train wreck of a food system and greediness of industry! By treating refined foods as a drug and teaching America how to live healthily and prevent disease we will reduce the great burden of medical care. Why is it that the US is the most unhealthy nation as a 'first world nation but spends the most on healthcare of any other other country? Re-imagine the food-pharmaceutical complex for a healthier country!
