Ladies and Gentlemen; I speak in favor of approving the Consumer's Energy request to create two nonhazardous waste-water disposal wells. The technology is well understood and proven, in no way novel or experimental, and is subject to sufficient regulatory oversight to ensure its safety to Michigan residents now and into the future. The approximately one mile deep wells will keep any included detritus out of Ottawa County aquifers, which are far closer to the surface and more likely to be contaminated by landfill runoff if these wells are not approved, constructed, and properly used. Even after the Campbell plant closes, the ash and cinders accumulated over its many years of operation will remain, and without the disposal wells that Consumers has proposed and will be expected to maintain in perpetuity, every rain storm and spring meltoff will threaten Ottawa County's aquifers, nearby streams and rivers, and Lake Michigan itself.
