Summary: The commenter notes that the proposed area contains significant archaeological and paleontological resources from the last glacial advance. They request that the public be informed of the status of cultural resource surveys if the proposal proceeds.
The area proposed for commercial minerals recovery is known to contain important archaeological and paleontological resources dating to periods when sea level was much lower than present day, i.e., during the last glacial advance. BOEM has procedures and policies in place to ensure appropriate cultural resources surveys are conducted by professionally qualified investigators prior to approving such a lease. The public must be informed of the status of these investigations if the proposal is approved for further consideration by the agency.
