Summary: The commenter, representing VIMS, opposes the proposed action due to concerns that digging for minerals will cause murky waters and damage eelgrass, crabs, clams, oysters, and mussels. They argue that environmental stewardship, tourism, and seafood harvesting are more important than capital profit.
VIMS has long been working to revive the eelgrass that nurtures crabs, clams, oysters and mussels. These are all important to slowing shoreline erosion and to restoring health to the waters. Any digging will cause murky waters that will affect both plant and animal health.
It is time to consider our environmental resposibility as stewarts of this area instead of capital profit. Tourism and sea food harvesting is far more important to our area.
