Summary: The commenter supports the proposed change to align the sex question on Form 4473 with biological binary categories. However, they suggest that the most effective solution would be to remove the question from the form entirely to simplify the process and avoid controversy.
I am generally in favor of this of this proposed change to form 4473 Primarily because this change would align the question at issue on this form to the scientific fact that human chromosomal sexual biology is a binary category structure (barring of course some forms of developmental disorders). And the more we as a society recognize the reality of truth, the better society functions.
As to the vocal opposition to this proposed change I would point out that for decades this question on form 4473 was binary and there did not seem to be problems with people answering this question.
However I propose that an even simpler option now that many have expressed passionate opposition to this change, would be to remove question 14 (that askes a persons sex ) entirely from the form. Not only would this resolve the worries of those opposing this change ,it would shorten and simplify the form and the required identification is already being recorded when the persons ID is being photo copied, so the question seems unnecessary.
In short -I support this proposed change ,but think a better option would be to remove the question entirely from form 4473.
