I support the Coast Guard’s proposed updates to the safety zones in the Eastern Great Lakes region. Overall, these changes appear reasonable and focused on improving public safety during large marine events, fireworks displays, races, and paddling competitions. Many of the proposed updates, such as increasing safety zone sizes and adjusting coordinates to better match actual event locations, make sense because they help account for changing weather conditions, boat traffic, and larger event participation. I especially support the changes that improve accuracy and clarity, including the updated descriptions for events like Blazing Paddles, Whiskey Island Paddlefest, and Madison Light Up the Park. I also agree with removing obsolete events from the regulations. Keeping the list current helps boaters, local communities, and law enforcement better understand which waterways may be temporarily restricted each year. At the same time, I encourage the Coast Guard to continue making sure these safety zones are enforced for the shortest practical amount of time so recreational boaters and local businesses are not unnecessarily impacted during busy summer weekends. Clear public communication through marine radio broadcasts, local notices, and online updates will also be important. Overall, this proposal appears balanced and focused on protecting public safety while still allowing reasonable access to navigable waters.
