Summary: A retired federal employee shares their personal success with physical fitness and argues that providing employees with time to work out would improve health. They suggest that such a policy would lead to a healthier workforce, reduced sick leave usage, and increased productivity.
When I retired from my first career I was 265 pounds and my resting BP was 180/105. Since joining the Federal Government I walk 5-7 miles a day and work out in the gym 3-4 times a week. I am now 180 pounds and my resting BP is 120/70. There is something to be said for physical fitness and I have more energy, no medical issues and have not had to use any sick time and have over 2000+ hours available I will retire with. Granting people time to work out might spur interest in getting in shape, would reduce sick time because people would be healthier and result in less sick time usage. In the long run a healthier employee is a better employee.
