Summary: A nuclear industry professional supports the deployment of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) as a necessary transition from coal to carbon-free power. As a nuclear professional with more than twenty years of experience, I am excited for this new way of doing business to be deployed in the US. China and Russia have shown that this technology can actively produce power and connect to the grid. With the constraints of time and funding, new nuclear needs to take on a non-traditional footprint and the SMR is the perfect, vetted technology. Belews Creek is currently utilizing coal. We must shift away from this archaic and pollution riddle way for generating power and adopt more green, reliable, and powerful technology. Nuclear is our only means for sustaining grid stability while providing enough megawatts for the everchanging societal demands and achieving our promise of net zero carbon emissions to protect our planet. With any luck, those who take the time to submit comments either for or against this move forward have educated themselves and if not, the NRC will see through the fear mongering and misinformation so many have about nuclear. Having been in operation now for more than a half century, nuclear has proven itself and so have the professionals who have safely and continue to safely operate reactors daily. With the increased demands for electricity and this only going up, nuclear is the perfect fuel and SMRs are the perfect technology for deployment since they compact, affordable, quick to construct, emission-less, and in some cases transportable.
