Thank you for recognizing rock climbing as appropriate use of public lands. In order to climb safely, several provisions must be clear and explicit. First, fixed hardware is necessary. Second, this hardware needs to be replaced and modernized periodically. Modernization allows for hardware that will last longer and minimize impact while maintaining safety. For example, old hardware relied upon 1/4” bolts but best practices indicate 3/8” or 1/2” bolts. Also, glue is sometimes necessary for glue in bolts that last longer and are necessary in some more friable rock types. Establishing new routes with new hardware should also be protected. This allows for human exploration of public lands. New routes help to spread climbers out and preserve a wilderness experience. These provisions should be universal and not made on a park by park basis. Also, the requirement for communication of the people doing this work with park staff is excessively burdensome and may prevent this necessary work from being completed.
