Summary: Ross Bruce suggests that the management plan should allow for purple urchin culling throughout the sanctuary. He argues that culling is more efficient than gathering and dumping, as it accelerates kelp growth and keeps nutrients within the local ecology.
Hello NOAA,I suggest you allow purple urchin culling throughout the sanctuary. I have worked culling urchins at the Casper Cove location as well as gathering urchins for removal and disposal in a landfill at Stillwater cove and have concluded that culling is vastly more efficient than gathering and dumping purple urchins. Culling accelerates kelp growth much faster than gathering and crucially keeps all the nutrients from the crushed urchins in the cove they were culled in thereby benefiting the local ecology.
