Comment from Purple Urchin Removal Project (PURPs)

Purple Urchin Removal Project (PURPs)SupportIndividual
Summary: An individual is requesting that regulations be opened to allow for more hammering or smashing of purple urchins in the Greater Farallones and Cordell Banks areas. The commenter argues that reducing the urchin population will help kelp forests recover.
As the kelp on the California coast continue to struggle to recover, and in light of the success the various groups on the north coast who are either hammering or capturing purple urchins and bringing them to shore where kelp have shown they have the space to better recover, I would like to kindly request an opening of regulations to allow more hammering or smashing of purple urchins in the Greater Farallones and Cordell Banks areas. I believe more volunteers would be able and willing to participate and more purple urchin, especially in harder to harvest areas, would be mitigated to increase kelp regrowth. Please consider this regulation change. Thank you.
