Summary: A professional truck driver argues that Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) systems are unsafe because they frequently trigger false emergency braking events. The commenter shares personal experiences where these malfunctions caused dangerous trailer swings and nearly led to collisions with oncoming traffic.
I have been a Professional Truck Driver going on 8 years.
As I entered the industry I have driven trucks that have had AEB installed with numerous false emergency braking, particularly around curves and a few on straight-away when the sun "hits" system just right and causes the rig to falsely sense an expected collision resulting in emergency breaking, as result of these false breaking incidents and if I was not in control of the vehicle my trailer began to swing in oncoming traffic lanes, rockface and ravines.
Just this week, while driving a 2023 Freightliner along US-191 in Utah the AEB system activated for NO reason almost causing trailer to swerve into oncoming traffic with an RV.
If I had a choice of whether or not to drive a rig with AEB, which I don't have a choice because I am a company driver, I would NOT!
The AEB Sytems are NOT safe!
