There is no way AI (artificial intelligence) can replace the lightening processing of the human brain. My new car has this AEB technology on it. I was in a construction zone doing the construction zone speed limit, when I came around a curve and a jersey barrier dividing the right lane from the construction zone on the off ramp. The barrier was several feet off the lane line, my lane departure warning never went off but the AEB slammed on the brakes nearly causing a 10 car pile up behind me because the bozos behind me were tailgating and didn't think I was going fast enough. Another time it was pouring down rain when the car in front of me hit a pothole driving a wall of water into my grill. I was able to avoid the pothole but the AEB slammed on the brakes causing me to fishtail and nearly loose control of my vehicle because the action was totally unexpected. These incidents have happened over and over again. An idiot cuts across 4 lanes of traffic to take the off ramp I am passing, I saw him coming and took evasive action by slowing down and changing lanes but the AEB once again slammed on the brakes well after the idiot was long gone. All of this was in my personal vehicle. I am a very careful driver, I pay attention to what is going on around me not just in front of me. That is something the AEB can't take into account nor, it seems, does it take into account the actions of the driver. I am a professional long haul trucker and I haul explosives for the military. I can't even imagine the ramifications of what this would do if I were to encounter any of these situations while hauling 40,000 Lbs of bombs down the road and an AEB system just arbitrarily slammed on the brakes. The way my car jerked and swung, if that had been my truck not only would I have jackknifed but there is a good chance I would have rolled over causing serious injury to the drivers around me. The idea that you want to force this technology down our throats with out even thinking about the ramifications is truly scary. If you want to know how this will ultimately impact the trucking industry, get out there and actually ride with a trucker, preferably one who does what I do or something similar. I can and have reacted faster to situations then the computer in my car because I can see it coming and anticipate the stupidity of the drivers around me. If you truly want to create a safe driving environment for everybody, start in the schools teaching common road curtsey and start enforcing the laws that already exist. Hold car drivers accountable for their own actions and stop blaming everything on the truckers. We are professionals and we are watching out for your safety, but you have to be pro-active in taking care of your own safety as well. There is only so much I can do to protect you from your own stupidity without putting other people at risk. I will continue to do my utmost best to protect the driving public, please don't let this technology take that out of my hands. I truly believe that would be a disaster.
