Summary: A truck driver with over 30 years of experience shares personal anecdotes about the malfunctions and dangers of automatic emergency braking (AEB) systems in heavy vehicles. The commenter argues that these systems can cause dangerous braking behavior and has stated they would not purchase trucks equipped with this technology.
I had the radar only system in a 1999 Freightliner and I would go red detecting guard rails and overpasses, fortunately without automatic braking. I also owned a 2012 International Prostar with AEB and it applied the brakes so hard my trailer locked up (empty) and the people behind me to almost rear end me avoiding me only by swerving into a right turn lane. This was because a car coming the opposite direction turned across my path of travel to enter a convenience store but apparently the AEB system only saw a static object in the road and released the brakes as soon as it cleared my lane. I had that truck less than 10000 miles after purchasing it and the last two I've owned I would not have purchased if they had it. 30+ years experience.
