I am surprised that it is not already a requirement for new cars to have seat belt reminders in all seating positions. I would think it was even more important to be alerted to passengers in the backseat not wearing seatbelts given the driver (perhaps a parent, aunt, grandparent) can not see when a child may remove their seatbelt as a fun game that would turn into a tragedy should that car be involved in an accident.
In addition, it is becoming more and more important for cars to alert a caregiver if they have inadvertently left a child in the backseat. I appreciate that for many it seems completely unbelievable that a caregiver could leave a child in a car however statistics prove that this is unfortunately a real risk in the busy society we live today. What is more unbelievable to me is that new cars alert the driver to leaving their headlights on and their keys in the car yet do not alert the driver to a child still strapped to the backseat about to be cooked to death.
