I'm writing in opposition to the Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) and associated permit that would authorize impacts to the federally threatened marbled murrelet during timber harvest operations. The proposed 300-foot buffers around sensitive murrelet areas are inadequate given the available science on their habits. These coastal forests should remain off limits to timber harvests since murrelets can only nest on mature and old growth trees, who's wide branches support their clumsy landings and primitive nest building. After years of touting theirselves as an example of sustainable forest management, Green Diamond knows better than to push this as an effort to manage forests sustainably. Please do what's right for the environment, and dismiss GD's push into these sensitive habitat areas.
