I am a landowner in Routt County, and active outdoorsman/hiker/backpacker. I thought the Wolf re-introduction proposal, voted in largely by Boulder County and Denver populations, was a terrible idea at the very onset for those that live in the Western Slope. Why? Because Moose and native Black Bears, the current two major concerns of hikers, backpackers, and bikers, are not exclusive carnivores and don't hunt in packs. Wolves do. CPW purposely hides the known real-time locations of the packs... they publish general ideas of where the wolves have been, and to no surprise, they are now hunting in the populated areas, and in the popular hiking and camping spots in Routt County and others. Since CPW will not institute a program where recreationalists and ranchers can get a real time "proximity" alert on their cell phone if a tagged wolf pack is nearby, we outdoorsmen are in constant state of alert and anxiety especially at night. Gone are the days where my son and his friends can wander a bit from camp with the dog to explore. Gone are the days where I can hike backcountry for a solo overnighter. Ranchers (and taxpayers) are being impacted by wolves, even with the small numbers of wolves currently in the populace. Can someone project the damage and costs to taxpayers if the wolves reach the thousands in Colorado? Additionally, if this program continues, it's only a matter of time before a wolf or pack attacks a local hiker, biker, or camper.... and it won't be, more likely than not, someone from Boulder or Denver who voted for this program. Please end this program. Wolves (and Grizzlies) were eradicated from Colorado for a good reason. History always repeats itself. It does not need to happen in this case.
