I am writing in support of the proposed exemption that would allow DACA recipients to continue obtaining and renewing their Class B CDLs. While I strongly support the rule of law, I also believe in fairness and common sense. Over the years, I have known several Dreamers, and every one of them has been hardworking, responsible, and committed to their communities. When I first learned about this issue, it seemed unfair to exclude a group of people who have followed all requirements, earned the necessary credentials, and met the same standards as other commercial drivers. In the district where I live, there is an ongoing need for school bus drivers. Many positions remain difficult to fill because the work can be challenging and the pay is not always competitive. If qualified individuals are willing to do this important work and have passed all federal, state, and local safety requirements, they should be allowed to continue driving. DACA recipients who hold CDLs have demonstrated their ability to operate safely and professionally. Allowing them to keep their Class B CDLs benefits schools, transit agencies, employers, and the communities that rely on these essential transportation services. For these reasons, I respectfully urge support for this exemption.
