As a trucking company owner for the last five years, I wanted to share my perspective on this. Over the years, I’ve hired all kinds of drivers—citizens, permanent residents, and people with work permits (EAD) who don't have a permanent legal status. If you look at our company’s safety records, there is absolutely no difference in how they drive or how they follow the rules. In fact, I’ve noticed that drivers with work permits are often the most responsible ones on the road. They have a deep respect for the law because they know their situation is temporary and they can’t afford to make a mistake. They take their jobs incredibly seriously. Many of them come from Latin American backgrounds, where a strong, honest work ethic is everything. I’ve talked to several of these drivers recently. They aren't asking for handouts; they are perfectly willing to retake their tests or undergo regular background checks if that’s what it takes. Most of them have been driving commercial trucks for over five years. A five-year driving history gives you more than enough data to see exactly how safe and reliable a driver is. Taking away their livelihoods like this feels completely arbitrary. Not having a permanent immigration status doesn’t make a professional, hard-working driver a danger to our highways. They are essential to our economy, and they deserve the chance to keep working.
