FDA has publicly stated that ingestible fluoride prescription drug products intended for prevention of dental caries have not undergone FDA approval through the New Drug Application process required by 21 U.S.C. §355. Therefore, fluoride compounds added to water for community level fluoridation should also have FDA approval.
