Summary: A retired water treatment professional and licensed engineer supports the citizen petition. The commenter argues that fluoridation chemicals are drugs added to public water supplies and should be properly regulated by the FDA.
Docket No. FDA-2026-P-6813 Comment in Support of Citizen Petition In this age of increasingly focused attention on transparency and accountability, the FDA has an obligation to taxpayers to judiciously respond to this petition in decisive, meaningful terms. I am a retired water treatment professional, licensed Professional Engineer (Civil and Control Systems), with Life Member status granted by the American Water Works Association (AWWA). I therefore support this Citizen Petition so I can also obtain the knowledge to better understand how and why adding fluoridation chemicals to public water supplies has not received proper regulation by the FDA. Fluoridation chemicals are added to public drinking water supplies as a drug for preventing dental caries (tooth decay); that fact has never been disputed. Fluorosilicic acid, sodium fluoride, and sodium fluorosilicate are the medicines - drugs - by definition that are added to public water for that sole purpose. They are the only chemicals added at drinking water treatment plants to treat the people consuming that water. All other chemicals are added to treat the water to make it safe for human consumption. Thank you for this opportunity to provide a comment and for your judicious and honest response to this petition.
