My 6 year old dog was given Librela for 8 months following a full physical, ortho, and neuro exams; radiographs, bloodwork and urinalysis. He has severe hip dysplasia. For personal reasons I wanted to get him off of all drugs by substituting physical fitness and exercise which I did. It is 3 years later, he has been off of all medications for 3 years and has been on onlt fish oil 100mg/kg body weight daily. Librela helped transition him to an exercise program. I know many people who's dogs Librela has helped. I think some veterinarians are prescribing it without full workups to determine if the dog is a good candidate and likely many clients will not pay for the full work up anyway. When dogs die people look for things to blame and I think Librela has been an easy target due to some vets prescribing it without verifying the dog is a good candidate for the drug. I would hate to see Librela removed from the market when there are good candidate dogs it can help. I hope the FDA will see the emotional please of people compaining it killed there dog as just looking for something to blame without evidence. I do believe it has harmed some dogs- all medications are not ideal for all dogs. I think the use cases need to be more carefully defined for veterinarians and would like to see funding for longer term clinical trials of Librela.
