To learn that many eggs carrying this label come from birds who may spend 98–100% of their lives indoors, and in some cases have never set foot on actual pasture, is deeply troubling.
This is not a matter of preference — it is a matter of truth in labeling. Consumers deserve to know exactly what they are buying. Farmers who are doing the right thing — maintaining real pasture, rotating flocks, and prioritizing animal welfare — deserve a level playing field. Right now, the absence of a clear FDA standard allows bad actors to profit from greenwashing while undermining those who are genuinely committed to pasture-based practices.
I urge the FDA to act swiftly and establish a meaningful, science-based standard requiring that eggs labeled "Pasture Raised" come from hens with authentic, substantial outdoor pasture access.
