Summary: The executive director of Miles for Migraine, a nonprofit organization, supports the proposed action to provide patients with access to effective migraine treatments. They argue that this would reduce the burden on a siloed healthcare system and suggest including educational materials to help patients avoid the risks of self-medicating with NSAIDs.
I am the executive director of a nonprofit called Miles for Migraine. Our organization supports people living with the disability that Migraine causes. Many of our patients have comorbidities and spend a lot of their time seeking care from multiple specialists for their multiple chronic conditions. Having to manage Migraine on top of multiple chronic conditions has left them exasperated. Allowing patients the freedom to have access to this effective treatment would free up some of their time seeking treatment in our siloed healthcare system. Furthermore, research shows that many people are undiagnosed with Migraine and are using otc NSAIDs to treat their headaches which is causing rebound headache, and additionally can cause G.I. bleed and liver toxicity. Therefore, my suggestion would be to include a patient pamphlet about the proper use of a board of medication, such as triptans might help to alleviate this problem.
