Summary: An individual commenter supports the proposed action by the Soft Lights Foundation, which seeks to ban LED lights. The commenter argues that LEDs are destructive to human health and the environment, disrupting sleep cycles and biological functions, and calls for a total ban on their production and installation.
To those who make the rules at the FDA, please hear us, we have suffered long enough under LED lights. At offices, restaurants, schools, nursing homes, hospitals, grocery and retail stores, libraries and other establishments, on the road with streetlights and car headlights, LEDs have been installed everywhere. This is not a success, it's destructive for both humans and our environment.
Blue light glasses are an entire industry now, a product that didn't even exist when I was growing up (born in the 80s). We had to find some way to block out these harmful lights, in the hopes that they were a temporary measure and band-aid until the situation was truly remedied. Things cannot continue like this, with LEDs disrupting sleep cycles for all living creatures.
And in fact, the FDA is in violation of the law (Radiation Control provisions of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act under 21 USC 360ii, which directs the Secretary of the FDA to establish an electronic product radiation control program by, among other things, promulgating performance standards for (all) electronic products.
But let's be real - no amount of regulations, standards or restrictions on LED performance or their use would make them an acceptable product. They are not a good form of lighting, i any capacity. When the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 called for an equivalent light source to be produced which is more energy efficient, LEDs are what we got, and they are far from "equivalent". And then, the FDA violated the law by failing to regulate LEDs, leading to the out of control situation that we have today.
The only course of action which would provide a real solution is to ban LEDs altogether. Cease with producing them, installing them, encouraging and marketing them, and reverse the partial ban on incandescent lights. Allow the environment and humans to function optimally, without constant sleep and biological disruptions. Your grandchildren will thank you!
