Summary: The commenter supports the FDA conducting stronger, more frequent, and science-based reviews of BHT and other food additives. They specifically advocate for testing chemicals in combination rather than in isolation and call for increased transparency through updated food labeling statutes.
The FDA has acknowledged that there are 3,971 approved substances added to foods (https://www.hfpappexternal.fda.gov/scripts/fdcc/index.cfm?set=FoodSubstances). Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) in one of them. I support stronger and more frequent reviews from the FDA concerning BHT and all of the thousands of other substances added to our food supply. The need for science-based food chemical reviews is greater now than ever before. There needs to be scrutiny and testing done to determine if the combination of these chemicals is causing harm to human health. Most testing of these chemicals are done in isolation with no concern given to the effects of the chemicals when combined together in the food product. These chemicals need to be tested both in isolation and in combination with other chemicals that are frequently combined together in specific foods. This should be done in conjunction with changes in the food labeling statutes for greater transparency, allowing consumers to make more educated decisions on what they consume.
