Placing a warning about autism on acetaminophen products is a misguided and unsubstantiated regulatory overreach. It would cause economic consequences to manufacturers, distributors, sellers, and purchasers of these products while simultaneously paradoxically increasing risk of neurodevelopmental abnormalities in babies by impacting the use of one of the very few fever-reducing medications that it is safe to use during pregnancy.
Studies that actually account for confounding factors such as family circumstance and genetics show no association between autism and acetaminophen use, but many studies have shown causative effects of untreated fever during pregnancy.
