Summary: A healthcare professional with 32 years of clinical experience advocates for making ivermectin available over-the-counter in all 50 states. The commenter argues that the drug is safe, effective for various conditions including scabies and COVID-19, and less risky than other medications like mifepristone.
I would like to see ivermectin over-the-counter. I have seen it used in the nursing home where I worked, where there are fragile patients, for scabies outbreaks that wouldn't seem to go away with topical--no reported side effect at all. It has been used for MANY years with no problems when used as directed. Many people during Covid resorted to taking Animal drugs and trying to guess at the dose, which I think is unsafe, and hence, we had problems. Doctors were threatened to not prescribe it for Covid, though it had been shown to work. I followed the reports from outside the USA. In other countries, they wiped out Covid (these are POOR countries like India where an entire village wiped it out by treating those with the illness and those exposed--end of problem). It is useful in many ways and should not be withheld from US citizens. This is SO MUCH SAFER than mifepristone, which is MAILED to people witih no exam first. Why can we not allow citizens to take something that is proven safer over the decades than that? Please make this over-the-counter in all 50 states. It has many uses and is safe to consume when patients know what to take (just like Tylenol, which I HAVE seen overdoses from taking too much in my 32 years of clinical practice).
