As a T1D of Almost 50 years, first I lived through the loss of $8-15/vial Lente as it was replaced by Levemir. It was a one-to-one swap of 2 1/2 units 3 times a day. The only difference by this patient was a huge price increase. The two products were adaptable, mostly peakless and predictable.
I tried Lantus (glargine) for about six weeks. It was a disaster. Two doses a day totaling 7 units. Didn't last 12 hours. Did have huge peaks often at 2 a.m. resulting in what I call "feed fests" sitting in the middle of my kitchen with orange juice and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Very fast weight gain not to mention disrupted sleep while working full-time.
Then the loss of Levemir and Tresiba. Again more expensive and again it stinks. Again I split it but it requires larger doses and yup weight gain. Not predictable. Not effective but yes disruptive. And certainly nor adaptable.Please fix this greed with the three insulin manufacturers and give us Levemir back.
