Summary: Dr. David K. Tensmeyer, a physician and Type 1 diabetic, supports keeping insulin Detemir (Levemir) available as a flexible basal insulin option. He highlights its specific benefits for Type 1 diabetics and for managing insulin needs during the menstrual cycle.
As a Family Medicine/Sports Medicine physican since 1984, I strongly advocate for keeping insulin Detemir (Levemir) available as an option for both Type 2, but ESPECIALLY Type 1 diabetics. It is uniquely flexible as a basal type of insulin.
I also am a type 1 diabetic since 1968, served as a diabetic camp physician for 20 years. Insulin detemir is especially helpful for female diabetics, in order to adjust basal insulin needs at phases of the menstrual cycle. David K. Tensmeyer, MD
