Summary: A private citizen who suffered from severe spinal fractures and subsequent pain management issues argues that NarxCare and similar opioid risk scoring systems are unfairly impacting patient care. She supports the proposed action to classify NarxCare as Software as a Medical Device (SaMD) to ensure it is regulated and transparent.
October 2024, I had two wedge compression fractures of T11-T12. I was in excruciating pain. I went to ER twice and was given dexamethasone, which by the time I got out to the car, had worn off. I have since found a Pain Management doctor to help me. It's been sheer hell since then. The fractures caused an inpingement to the spinal cord and I had surgery where two screws were put in. It's been sheer hell since that as well. I also was badgered by the Walmart pharmacist because I called up and asked why they didn't fill the full 30 day supply as I had no idea this debachery was even going on in this country! She became a pit-bull and even had the audacity to call me a drug seeker!!! I'm a 73-year-old great grandma who has NEVER had to take narcotics except for a tooth ache back in 2014, which thank God, I still had a bottle with about six pills in it. I made official complaints to Corporate Walmart, the Texas Medical Board, the Texas Pharmaceutical Board, all to no avail! To my horror, that when I started doing research into this ridiculous narcotic tragedy! Then, last year in 2025, my oldest friend, who we went from grade 1-6 together and had remained friends all these years, told me that her husband suffered five compression fractures and was taken to the ER IN El Paso, TX where he was refused pain meds and died right there in the ER!!!
I've learned since then that there's a score, NarxCare, PDMP scoring, pharmacy flags, opioid risk scores, or algorithmic “red flags” can affect your care. What has happened in this country??? Why am I punished because someone decided to get high on narcotics and OD'd??? Why is medical care kept from me? I've never had a drug problem! I've never used drugs for recreational purposes??? I'm asking you to classify NarxCare as Software as a Medical Device so it can be regulated and transparent. That's the right thing to do. People shouldn't have to suffer like that. It's inhumane.
