Summary: The commenter, an emergency room nurse and patient, supports maintaining access to regulated compounding of peptide medications. They argue that providing these medications through legitimate compounding pharmacies ensures patient safety and prevents individuals from seeking unregulated, potentially dangerous alternatives.
I am writing in support of maintaining access to safe, regulated compounding of peptide medications under the supervision of licensed healthcare providers.
As an emergency room nurse, I have spent years caring for patients with chronic diseases that are often preventable or made worse by obesity, insulin resistance, inflammation, and poor metabolic health. While emergency medicine is critical, I also believe we need to prioritize prevention and give patients more evidence-informed tools to improve their long-term health.
Earlier this year, I began working with a licensed healthcare provider and started a personalized peptide protocol. My journey has been life-changing. By using a low-dose GLP-1/GIP medication alongside strength training, adequate protein, hydration, and healthy lifestyle habits, I have lost over 20 pounds, reduced my waist by more than six inches, improved my relationship with food by significantly reducing food noise, and have been able to preserve and even build muscle throughout the process.
Beyond weight loss, I have also worked with my provider to incorporate other peptide therapies focused on recovery, sleep, and overall wellness. Having access to these therapies through a legitimate telehealth platform and a regulated compounding pharmacy gave me confidence that I was receiving medications that met high quality standards and were prescribed based on my individual health needs.
If patients lose access to legitimate compounded peptide medications, many will not simply stop seeking treatment. Instead, they may turn to unregulated online sources or gray-market products that lack physician oversight, quality testing, and safety standards. That outcome would put patients at far greater risk.
I fully support strong oversight of compounding pharmacies, including rigorous testing for purity, potency, sterility, and contaminants, appropriate prescribing by licensed healthcare professionals, and continued adverse event reporting and research. Patient safety should always come first.
I respectfully ask the FDA to support continued access to appropriately compounded peptide medications when there is a legitimate medical need and when they are prepared by qualified compounding pharmacies under existing regulatory standards. Responsible compounding expands access, supports individualized patient care, and allows healthcare providers to help patients improve their health safely and responsibly.
Thank you for considering my perspective as both a healthcare professional and a patient whose life has been positively impacted by access to provider-supervised compounded peptide therapy.
