Summary: The commenter, a private individual, supports the petition to require "contains animal" disclosures on all food products sold in the United States. They argue that current labeling is insufficient for those with spiritual or moral reasons for avoiding animal products, making it difficult to navigate grocery stores and restaurants safely.
I am writing on behalf of Citizen Petition from Animal Legal Defense Fund, et al to request to disclose “contains animal” in all food products sold in USA. I do not eat anything with animal products for spiritual and moral reasons. Eating out or a trip to the grocery is a strained task as often needing to read small prints and search internet for meanings. Several food items do not have any disclosers about animal product; while most common culprit are cheese & yogurts, the animal product can be present in items like chips/bakes goods etc. without any indication. Internet research is often misleading or unhelpful as ingredients like as microbial rennet can be plant based on animal based. Product makers have lot of space to write big, long scientific names and big images but yet they fail to add simple disclosers because there is no strict law to do so. If the labeling guidance is strict and required in all products sold in USA, it will have a trickling effect on overall consumer food market. Smaller business can easily identify and label correctly when their source is using correct labeling. Restaurants can stop misleading food under “vegetarian” category when they clearly can see labels in the products. 99% of the time restaurant/food joint employees are unhelpful when asked. They do not understand the concept of animal free product (try asking someone if their vegetarian pizza is indeed free to rennet – so far no one has confirmed that for me except one specialized small restaurants in my city).
