Summary: An individual consumer supports the proposed rule to improve food labeling regarding animal-derived ingredients. They argue that clearer disclosures are necessary for people with life-threatening allergies, health concerns, or specific ethical and religious beliefs.
I fully support this rule. As a person who wishes to make healthier and more humane choices about the food I consume, this disclosure would make it easier and less cumbersome to do so. I am not alone in wanting greater clarity in food labeling. A recent survey revealed that Americans overwhelmingly want to know, but —under current FDA labeling requirements — disturbingly cannot tell when their food contains animal-derived ingredients. This issue is important because life-threatening allergies such as alpha-gal syndrome can be triggered by even trace amounts of animal-derived ingredients. Consumers may also have other allergies, health concerns, or closely held ethical or religious beliefs that prohibit their consumption of foods that contain animal-derived ingredients. I urge the FDA to adopt this rule and make food labeling clearer for those wishing to avoid animal ingredients.
