Summary: A veterinarian with 45 years of experience is requesting the inclusion of Ponazuril on the list of bulk drug substances for compounding. They argue that the medication is necessary for the rapid treatment of life-threatening coccidia in young animals and that there is no faster alternative.
Ponazuril: This medication quickly eliminates coccidia from kittens and puppies within 1-3 daily doses. A severe case of coccidia can cause death within 12 hours in young patients due to vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. It is not feasible to write a prescription for this medication with a lapse time of several days before treatment is instigated. There is not an alternative drug that works as quickly. I have been practicing veterinary medicine for 45 years, and not having this drug on hand to give immediately has cost some of my patients their life. I thank you for your consideration.
