Ponazuril:
This medication quickly eliminates coccidia from kittens and puppies within 1-3 daily doses. A severe case of coccidia can cause death within 12 hours in young patients due to vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.
It is not feasible to write a prescription for this medication with a lapse time of several days before treatment is instigated.
There is not an alternative drug that works as quickly.
I have been practicing veterinary medicine for 45 years, and not having this drug on hand to give immediately has cost some of my patients their life.
