I am a medical director at a large hospital. We have used Ponazuril for Coccidia in small kittens and puppies for years. We get this medication for dispensing through Wedgewood. We are no longer able to do so without having it mailed individually to the patient. The fecal testing takes 3-4 day, the medication mailing takes 3-5 days. I am really unhappy with this outcome due to the risk of the patient. Ponazuril is a cidal drug meaning it kills the organism. The other option is Albon (sulfadimethoxine) which is only coccidiostatic meaning it does not "kill" like Ponazuril. We cannot have puppies and kittens without medication for 5-7 days with diarrhea. Therefore, I feel this decision was poorly thought out from the small animal veterinary standpoint. Please re-consider Ponazuril as a medicaiton to be used in hospital.
