I need to have phenylbutazone available for office use as MANY horses despise the citrus flavor that is the flavoring of the FDA approved product. Additionally, many cannot stand the volume of powder that occurs with the FDA approved product. This means that horses that do not accept citrus flavor or large volumes of powder are CLINICALLY affected by very poor pain control and management. Compounded phenylbutazone allows for many different flavor combinations (some that are even sugar free, which can be critical for certain subsets of patients needing this drug) AND for a decreased volume of medication to administer, allowing for effective dosing of medication into horses that need to have pain and anti-inflammatory medications.
