Summary: An equine veterinarian is requesting that phenylbutazone be added to the list of bulk drug substances for compounding office stock. She argues that immediate access to various formulations of this medication is essential for the timely treatment of sick horses, especially since the commercial paste is currently unavailable.
I am an equine veterinarian. Phenylbutazone is one of the most essential medications that we use in the horse. It is imperative that equine veterinarians have this medication available at all times in a variety of formulations. Compounded formulations of phenylbutazone must be available to us to dispense to our clients, in order for a sick animal to be treated right away. A delay in treatment can be very devastating. We can't wait a week for this medication to be ordered and delivered. As it stands now, the commercial product of phenylbutazone paste is no longer available, and it is often the only formulation that can be given to certain horses. Please revise your regulations so that compounded phenylbutazone can be ordered for office stock. Thank you, Ann Marie Buonanno DVM
