Summary: A veterinary professional is requesting that the agency allow compounded Pimobendan oral solution to be kept in office stock for nonfood-producing animals. I am writing in regards to compounded Pimobendan oral suspension. Although I am aware an FDA approved Vetmedin oral solution is on the way, I know it will be some time before this product is available to us in the USA. When it becomes available, we will be certain to use the FDA approved drug. In the meantime, it is imperative for us to be able to obtain compounded Pimobendan oral solution for office use. This is very important for us for off-label treatment of our feline patients where a liquid is necessary to adequately dose them. Having a liquid readily available in our hospital is also important for our smaller canine patients who are difficult to administer the large Vetmedin tablet. Tablet sizes of the commercial product are too large for many feline and small canine patients, resulting in compliance failure.
Animals left untreated while waiting 1-2 weeks for a patient-specific prescription will deteriorate as they suffer worsened coughing, difficulty breathing, distress, or worse, death. This is why I am asking the agency to strongly reconsider the decision to not allow compounded Pimobendan oral solution for office stock, and make it available to us until the FDA approved product is on the market.
