Since we have been unable to purchase Methimazole for office use we have had issues properly treating some of our Hyperthyroid patients. We would like to have our clients come to see us as soon as there is an issue with their pet's health, but this is not always the case. Unfortunately, we see some cats that have waited too long to seek treatment. Hyperthyroidism can lead to hypertension, rapid heart rate, and weight loss. These cases need to be started on Methimazole as soon as possible. Many of these cats are not easy to medicate. Most owners can give liquid or transdermal medications easier than tablets. If we don't have any Methimazole suspension on hand owners have to wait up to 14 days to get their medication instead of immediately from us.
There are also times when the client needs Methimazole because they are going to run out before their new supply will arrive. Again if we have a supply available the cat will not miss any doses of its medication. It has been frustrating for us and our clients not to have Methimazole suspension available for our client's use.
