Summary: A veterinary practitioner who treats felines argues in favor of including methimazole on the list of bulk drug substances for compounding. They state that having compounded transdermal forms in stock is essential for treating hyperthyroidism and ensuring patients can receive regular medication.
I am a feline-only practitioner and diagnose hyperthyroidism frequently in my elderly patients. Methimazole in compounded forms is crucial to these patients getting the medications they need regularly for the rest of their life. Being able to get newly diagnosed patients started on transdermal forms in my office is necessary to be able to demonstrate proper technique of application. I need to be able to keep compounded forms of methimazole in stock in my pharmacy for these new patients and I need the compounding pharmacies to be able to have the bulk product necessary for these medications to be formulated for direct re-order from the compounding pharmacy. Please allow us to be able to do so.
