Summary: A veterinary practice representative argues that the new restrictions on bulk drug substances have created significant administrative burdens and logistical difficulties for their clinic. They express concern over delays in receiving medications for patients and the loss of convenient delivery options like transdermal pens.
I am replying to this survey to explain how the new restrictions have affected our clients. With the new restrictions, we have had a huge increase in difficulty ordering medicine that our patients need. Most people do not understand the job that veterinary technicians have. We handle our clients from the phone call, to the appointment, to the billing, to ordering meds, to follow-up care, and much, much more. These new restrictions have added more tasks to our list. We struggle to place orders that were once placed in seconds. Constantly, we have to check on shipment information because already we have had AT LEAST four clients not get the meds their pets needed on time that I have personally dealt with. Also, we have "special" cases where multiple pets require the same medicine. I am not exaggerating when I saw it's a nightmare to order for them. We did not need this extra workload added to our practice. While I do not know everything about our pharmacy, I can't imagine what their workload has become due to this change. In the past, we spoke directly on the phone to our pharmacy maybe a few times a month. Now, it's a few times a week if not almost daily. This is more than an "adjustment" period due to the change. I do not see how this is going to change. The transdermal pens were quite literally a life saver for our patients that do not tolerate being pilled. It gave owners a sense of ease. We loved being able to provide our clients with another option. We now dread patient noncompliance with methimazole because we know the battle ahead to get the pens, and the worry of not receiving them in time.
