Summary: A veterinary professional argues that allowing compounded doxycycline suspensions to be kept in office stock is essential for patient care. They state that commercial options often require impractical dosing amounts and that compounded versions improve palatability and owner compliance.
Comment in reference to GFI #256 guidance. Stocking compounded options for doxycycline (suspension) are very important for our office as the commercially available options are not always an appropriate avenue for many of our patient's required dosing and we can't expect clients to be compliant in treating their pet appropriately when they need to give 6 pills at a time. Another vital reason to allow for office stock is so we can make this medication more palatable for the patient and therefore aid the owner in being able to administer the medication.
