Summary: The commenter supports the proposed action by advocating for stricter regulations on veterinary drug use. They specifically call for the FDA to request that Congress prohibit antibiotic use longer than 21 days and ban routine preventive use in healthy animals to combat antibiotic resistance.
While access to veterinary drugs is important for animals that are sick, these precious medicines should not be used to cover unhealthy conditions and inappropriate diets that are common on large animal confinement facilities. Very long duration of use spur the spread of dangerous antibiotic resistant superbugs that are dangerous for both people and animals. The FDA should ask Congress to prohibit durations of use of antibiotics that are longer than 21 days and and prohibit routine preventive use in animals that are not sick.
