Veterinary drugs benefit animals and their caretakers. However, the routine/chronic use/abuse of these drugs in agricultural food animals can produce drug-resistant micro-organisms and deadly unintended consequences in human populations.
So far, ADUFA has primarily been focused on getting drugs to markets more quickly. Now it must address the unintended consequences of animal drugs--in particular antibiotic resistance. The FDA must get greater authority from Congress to address antibiotic resistance as part of ADUFA reauthorization! This additional authority must include the ability to require label changes when specific uses create a public health risks..
