Summary: The commenter supports the FDA taking action to combat antibiotic resistance by requesting that Congress grant the agency the authority to collect data on antibiotic use at large livestock and poultry facilities. They also advocate for the FDA to seek the power to prohibit the overuse of antibiotics on these large-scale factory farms.
Combatting antibiotic resistance, an unintended consequence of the drug approval process, requires stopping unnecessary and inappropriate antibiotic use. In order to efficiently stop overuse, data on how and why antibiotics are used on giant livestock raising facilities is needed.
FDA should ask Congress for the ability to collect data on antibiotic use from the largest livestock and poultry facilities where most animals are raised and most veterinary drugs are used. FDA should also seek the ability to prohibit the overuse of antibiotics on these giant factory farms.
