Summary: An individual resident expresses concern about helicopters violating the North Shore Helicopter Route and flying at dangerously low altitudes. The commenter supports the enforcement of the route and regulations to mitigate noise and safety issues.
It should be noted that the helicopters coming from Bridgeport, CT, NJ, Martha’s Vineyard, MA and upstate NY seem to follow their own flight route. As soon as they see the Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant, they cross over the Wading River Marsh Preserve (The Nature Conservatory) and head south-easterly across Long Island to East Hampton Airport or Westhampton Beach Airport. It appears they feel no need to follow the North Shore Helicopter Route that the East End Helicopter Group voluntarily agreed to in 2008 and the FAA codified in 2012.
Additionally, the altitude at which they fly is deafening. This morning, 8/29/2022, I was greeted by an aircraft at an altitude of 400 feet... nowhere near the altitude it should have been per Federal Regulations (altitude per radarbox.com).
