Dear FAA,
The newly proposed rules for small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (commonly known as drones) are a step in the wrong direction. Drones, especially small drones, are different. They pose different safety risks, are easier and cheaper to fly, and pose greater privacy risks than manned aircraft. Instead of shoehorning drones into the same framework the FAA has used for regulating manned aircraft, I urge you to develop innovative new regulations to fit a 21st-century technology.
Specifically, I urge you to allow low-altitude general-purpose use (education, journalism, photography, etc.) with minimal restrictions. This means no registration, certification, or age limits on lightweight micro drones flown at low altitudes far away from airports.
While drones pose great risks to our privacy and safety, they also can be used to benefit society. If we want beneficial uses of drones to get off the ground, it is vital that the FAA modify its proposal in order to strike a better balance.
