Summary: A retired physician argues that air quality regulations are essential for public health and should not be sacrificed for industrial profits. He cites historical improvements in air quality and emphasizes the need to continue addressing pollution to protect the public.
As a retired physician I have dealt with respiratory physiology and function for many decades. Since the 1950s our regional air quality has been improved with regulations and enforcement. As a student my clothes would be blackened after a day in the city. Lung diseases were rampant and exacerbated by smoking. TB was poorly controlled and young people often died from it. Steel producing areas were known for severe air pollution. We must continue to address air quality for public health. Air quality must not be sacrificed for the benefit of short term profits to rich industrial interests. John E.Hohmann, MD
